DIOCESAN CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION GROUP
350 Work Day Tyre Air Pressure Project
Last year Auckland Synod encouraged churches to ring their bells as part of a global initiative on 350 Day. This year we have planned a practical congregation-based project.
Our motion before the 2010 Auckland Synod reads:
“That this Synod, in accord with Mission Statements 4 (Social Justice) and 5 (Care of Creation) of the Anglican Communion, encourages Ministry Units to develop and/or support local practical initiatives on October 10 2010, as part of a concerted global effort to raise awareness of the need to live more sustainably and reduce carbon emissions.”
The purpose of our project is to encourage people to regularly check their tyre pressures. As 350 Work Day falls on a Sunday this year, this is a perfect opportunity for congregations to become involved in teaching or learning a skill which will reduce our carbon footprints. Studies show that very few of us drive with the correct tyre pressure. This is mainly due to lack of regular checking. Driving on under-inflated tyres, as well as shortening the life of our tyres and being more unsafe, results in extra fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Suggested activities for Sunday 10 October:
- After your church service, measure tyre pressure on as many cars as possible and see how many are correct. Consider involving your Youth Group in this activity, which should be done in a flat off-road area. For best results, the tyres should be cold. Consider rewarding those who do have correctly inflated tyres.
- Hand out a prepared information leaflet on the environmental importance of correctly inflated tyres.
- Have volunteers teach others how to use a digital or pencil-type tyre pressure gauge.
- Distribute prompts to remind people to check their tyres. These could include stickers which are attached to the inside of the vehicle's petrol cap cover.
- Help those people who are not able to read their own pressures. Compile a list of service stations in your general area who are happy to measure tyre pressures and fill tyres for those who can not do it themselves.
You will need to register your congregation's event at 350.org.nz
Consider inviting a friendly tyre professional to be on hand at your event. Have a safety plan for working in your car park area.
For more detailed information and supporting material please email Christine Julian muspod@xtra.co.nz

Dear friends and colleagues,
This young man is away from home for 9 or 10 months and works on a ship that runs regularly up to Suva and back to Auckland. The difference in temperature is quite noticeable when the ship returns to Auckland in winter. The seafarers are very grateful to receive any jerseys and jumpers, hats, scarves and coats. They read bibles and bible notes, Time and National Geographic magazines. If you have time call in at the Seafarers centre, 114 Quay Street.
God Bless and safe journeys,
Chris
